Bio
I am one of the kindergarten teachers here at Newport Grammar School. I went to NGS K-8 and Cocke County High School 9-12. I graduated from Carson-Newman University with my Bachelors in Education (K-6) and Cumberland University with my Masters of Arts in Education. I have been teaching for 14 years. This is my seventh year teaching at Newport Grammar School. My husband's name is Chris and we have two sons, Shane (age 9) and Theo (age 7).

Starting Kindergarten Grade- What You Need to Know
Here's What Your Child Should Already Know Coming into Kindergarten:
Here's what we're learning right now...

These are standards we'll be covering:
1st Quarter Math Concepts
I can read and write my numbers 0-20.
I can count "how many" and write a numbers to represent the amount.
I can count to 20 starting at 1.
I can count forward from a given number.
I can count objects aloud using one-to-one correspondence.
I can count to answer how many.
I can understand that the last number name said tells the number of objected counted.
K.CC.A.2 Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (including beginning at 1).
K.CC.A.3 Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a numeral.
K.CC.B.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
a. When counting objects, say the number names in standard order, using one-to-one correspondence.
K.CC.B.5 Count to answer "how many" questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration. Given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
K.CC.B.4b Recognize that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they are counted.
1st Quarter English/Language Arts Concepts
I can spell and write my first name.
I can produce the letter sounds of all letters.
I can recognize and name all capital and lowercase letters.
I can form capital and lowercase letters to the alphabet.
I can write the letter for most sounds.
K.FL.WC.4 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills when encoding words. Write legibly.
K.FL.PWR.3a Recognize and name all upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet in isolation and in connected text.
K.FL.WC.4a Write uppercase and lowercase manuscript letters from memory.
K.FL.WC.4b Write a letters/letters for most consonant and short vowel sounds (phonemes).
K.FL.WC.4g Print many upper and lowercase letters.

HOMEWORK
S.T.A.R. folders go home nightly with a note about your child's daily behavior and any important papers.
Your child will have aR.E.D. (Read Every Day) folder. It will be sent home on Mondays in your child's homework baggie and will be expected to be returned on Friday with enclosed assignments completed.
